    Intent

    At St Luke’s School we want to prepare the children for the opportunities, experiences and responsibilities of life. Therefore, PSHE is at the heart of our curriculum as our aim is for all learners to understand and value their own selves as well as others. We want our pupils to develop strong personal skills, to be able to see their place in the world and to follow their dreams and goals. We aspire for all learners to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to thrive as happy, healthy, confident and caring individuals who celebrate diversity in our world. With PSHE, we bring together relationships and health education, emotional literacy, social skills, mindfulness and spiritual development that help equip our children for life. We use the PSHE programme called “Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE”.

    The aim of teaching PSHE at our school is:

    • To develop pupils’ love for themselves and others as human beings. To understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.
    • To develop the courage to face and take on challenges and to deal with difficulties and setbacks with resilience and perseverance.
    • To give and instil hope that they have the skills to prepare them for life; the hope that they will be successful and achieve their goals.

    Implementation

    To ensure progression and a spiralling curriculum, we, at St Luke’s, use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and we tailor it to our children’s needs. We teach Jigsaw each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. Class teachers deliver the weekly lessons to their own classes.

    Our school provides a curriculum that is broad, balanced and meets the needs of all pupils. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and it prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. It is designed upon a base of skills and knowledge that we want the children to learn. This is mapped out across the school in a progressive manner.

    Every lesson will:

    • Begin with a mindfulness exercise called ‘Calm Me Time’ which enables the pupils to relax and go to a place of optimum learning capacity.
    • Engage the pupils with the learning intention of the lesson and introduce new information, concepts and skills, using a range of teaching approaches and activities.
    • Enable the children to manipulate, use, and play with that new information in order for it to make sense to them and for them to ‘accommodate’ it into their existing learning.
    • Encourage the children to reflect on their learning experiences and their progress. By reflecting, children can process and evaluate what they have learnt, which enables them to consolidate and apply their learning.
    • End with the teacher praising the children for their effort, positive attitude and achievement, as well as giving one or two sentences to summarise the key learning points for the children.

    Impact

    We aim for all children to achieve age-related expectations for each unit of work as set out in the Jigsaw programme. In order to evaluate the level to which our children are retaining knowledge and are able to apply their learning to a range of situations, we use a range of techniques:

    • Regular feedback
    • Subject monitoring including book looks and pupil conferencing
    • Questioning in class using Jigsaw attainment descriptors for each unit of work
    • Regular summative assessments, recorded on DCPro to track progress, identify gaps and inform future planning
    • Year group moderation to ensure secure teacher judgements
    • Cross-curricular opportunities to apply the skills through other curriculum areas.

    Our PSHE curriculum plays a key role in supporting our school’s values of Love, Courage and Hope. At St Luke’s, the explicit PSHE lessons are reinforced an enhanced I many ways: collective worship, praise and reward system, positive behaviour policy, through relationships (child to child and adult to child and adult to adult) across the school. We aim to ‘live’ what is learned and apply it to everyday situations in and beyond our school community.
